Formation of the Danxia Landform
The Danxia Lanform
The formation of the Danxia landform originates from the Earth's long geological history and complex natural processes. During the Cretaceous period, approximately 135 million to 65 million years ago, thick layers of red sandstone and gravel were deposited in the Zhangye area. These layers, under the influence of geological movements, gradually rose and took shape into the Danxia landform we see today.
Over the long years, natural forces such as wind, rain, and water constantly eroded these red rock layers. Among them, weathering caused the layers to gradually peel and fragment, forming various unique topographical features. Meanwhile, the erosion and dissolution by water flow intensified this process, gradually releasing minerals and pigments from the rock layers, resulting in the colorful Danxia landform we admire today. It is worth mentioning that the colors of the Zhangye Colorful Danxia landform are not static. With the change of seasons, time, and light, these Danxia landscapes present different colors and lighting effects. During the early morning and evening, when the sunlight shines obliquely on the Danxia landscape, its colors become more vivid and the layers more abundant. In the rainy season, after being washed by rainwater, the Danxia landscape appears even fresher and more beautiful.
