Tengwang Pavilion


Tengwang Pavilion is a landmark building in Nanchang City and a symbol of the ancient civilization of Yuzhang. This pavilion was built in the fourth year of Yonghui in the Tang Dynasty (653) by Li Yuanying, the younger brother of Emperor Taizong Li Shimin when he served as the governor of Hongzhou in Jiangnan. It has a history of nearly 1,400 years. The existing building was a reconstructed landscape in 1985, but its ancient and elegant style and profound historical and cultural heritage have been preserved and inherited.

Tengwang Pavilion is characterized by its distinctive architectural features. Its exterior exhibits a typical pavilion-style design, with a magnificent and layered concave appearance, demonstrating the rigor and exquisite craftsmanship of Ming and Qing architecture. With a total height of 72 meters and nine floors, it elaborately illustrates the superb skills of Ming and Qing architecture, fully embodying the charm and value of ancient Chinese architectural culture. Tengwang Pavilion has gained worldwide fame due to the "Preface to Tengwang Pavilion" written by the early Tang Dynasty poet Wang Bo. It is known as one of the "Three Famous Pavilions in Jiangnan" along with Yueyang Tower in Hunan and Yellow Crane Tower in Wuhan, Hubei, and is also known as the “First Pavilion on the West River”. This pavilion is not only an architectural masterpiece but also an important witness and record of ancient Chinese culture and calligraphy art. There are many ancient books and calligraphy works inside the Tengwang Pavilion for research, including works written by Jia Wugong and calligraphy works handed down by Yu Xin.
