The China Ceramics Museum is the first large-scale ceramic museum in China. This museum not only carries a profound historical and cultural heritage but also serves as an important cultural symbol of Jingdezhen, the “City of Ceramics”. The museum was previously known as Jiangxi Jingdezhen Ceramics Museum, which opened in 1954 and officially opened to the public on January 1st, 1954. With a total land area of nearly 59,000 square meters and a building area of 32,000 square meters, the museum underwent renovations and reopened in October 2015. The museum collection boasts over 50,000 pieces of ceramic masterpieces from various historical periods, ranging from Neolithic pottery to those of the Han and Tang dynasties. Among these, 1,641 pieces (sets) are classified as national treasures, covering representative varieties from different eras of Jingdezhen’s ceramic history.
The main building of the museum has seven floors, and its design cleverly incorporates numerous ceramic elements. For instance, the pattern of the glass curtain wall is inspired by the "ice crack" texture on the surface of porcelain, and the ground floor hall is shaped like the furnace chamber of a kiln. Meanwhile, the long corridors connecting each floor are modeled after the ancient dragon kilns used for firing ceramics. This design not only gives the museum a unique appearance but also demonstrates a deep respect for ceramic culture.
