Ismoil Somoni Square

TIsmoil Somoni Square, located in the heart of Dushanbe, Tajikistan, is a significant landmark and a symbol of the city's cultural and historical heritage. The square is named after Ismail Samani, the founder of the Samanid dynasty, which is considered the first Tajik state. The Samanid dynasty played a crucial role in the formation of the Tajik nation and the spread of Islam in the region.

The square is dominated by a grand statue of Ismail Samani, which stands at an impressive height of 25 meters. The statue was erected in 1999 to commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of the Samanid State. The statue features Ismail Samani holding a golden scepter adorned with seven stars, which are also present on the national emblem of Tajikistan. These stars symbolize the seven traditional stars found above the seven mountains that tower above the seven orchards in heaven, a common element in Tajik legends and storytelling. The statue is surrounded by two stone lions, a common feature in the region and believed to be related to the once numerous Asiatic lions.

The square itself is a vibrant and lively area, with elegant fountains, well-maintained flower beds, and evergreen fir trees. It serves as a popular gathering spot for both locals and tourists. During the Soviet era, the square was named after a revolutionary leader and featured a statue of Lenin. However, after Tajikistan gained independence in 1991, the statue of Lenin was removed, and the current statue of Ismail Samani was installed in its place.

Adjacent to the square is the National Library of Tajikistan, which boasts a collection capacity of up to ten million books. The library's presence underscores the Tajik people's high regard for knowledge and culture, as reflected in the country's coat of arms, which features a book.

Ismoil Somoni Square is not only a testament to Tajikistan's rich history but also a vibrant hub of modern city life. It offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the cultural and historical significance of this Central Asian nation.
