Highlights of Shibaozhai

Architectural Wonder

Shibaozhai is a 12-story wooden pagoda standing 56 meters tall, built against the steep cliffs of Yuyin Mountain (Jade Seal Mountain). The structure was originally constructed during the Ming Dynasty (1573–1620) and expanded during the Qing Dynasty. It is one of the few remaining non-independent wooden structures in China and is often referred to as one of the "World's Eight Extraordinary Buildings".

The pavilion was designed to help pilgrims and visitors ascend the mountain without climbing the treacherous cliffs. Its intricate wooden beams and flying eaves showcase traditional Chinese craftsmanship.

Historical and Cultural Significance

The site is steeped in legend, with the mountain said to be a remnant of the Goddess Nvwa's efforts to repair the sky. The mountain’s shape, resembling a jade seal, earned it the nickname "Yuyin Mountain".

At the top of the pagoda lies the Emperor Palace, a sacred site dedicated to local deities. The temple's ancient statues and carvings reflect the region's spiritual heritage.

Scenic Beauty

Shibaozhai pagoda offers panoramic views of the Yangtze River and its surrounding landscapes. After the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, the rising water levels transformed the site into a "floating island," creating a unique landscape.

The suspension bridge leading to the pagoda adds to the site's charm, offering visitors a thrilling approach to this historic landmark.
