Ship Lift

The Three Gorges Ship Lift, located at the Three Gorges Dam in Yichang, Hubei Province, is one of the world’s largest and most advanced ship lifts. Designed to help vessels navigate the dam’s massive 113-meter elevation difference, this engineering wonder combines cutting-edge technology with sustainable design, offering travelers a unique glimpse into modern China’s innovation.

Basic Structure

Main Components

Ship Chamber: A massive water-filled chamber measuring 120 meters long, 18 meters wide, and 3.5 meters deep. It can hold vessels weighing up to 3,000 tons, equivalent to a small passenger ship or cargo vessel.

Vertical Guide Rails: Four sets of reinforced concrete towers equipped with steel guide rails ensure the ship chamber moves smoothly and stably.

Counterweight System: A 16,000-ton counterweight, connected by steel cables, balances the ship chamber’s weight, reducing energy consumption by over 60%.

Drive Mechanism: Powered by 256 synchronous motors, the system lifts or lowers the chamber at a speed of 0.2 meters per second.

Safety Systems

Emergency Brakes: Multiple fail-safe mechanisms, including hydraulic brakes and redundant power supplies.

Water Sealing Technology: Ensures no water leakage during operation, maintaining stability.

    How It Works

    Entry Phase

Vessels enter the ship chamber through lower or upper gates when the water levels inside and outside the chamber are equalized.

    Sealing & Lifting

The gates close, and the chamber is sealed. The drive system activates, lifting or lowering the chamber along the guide rails.

Exit Phase

Once aligned with the target water level, the gates reopen, and vessels sail out.

Total Time: Approximately 40 minutes to traverse the 113-meter height difference.

    Why It’s Special

World Records: Holds the title of the largest and most technically complex ship lift globally.

Eco-Friendly: Consumes 1/20th of the energy required for traditional lock systems.

Tourist Experience: Visitors can watch the ship lift in action from designated viewing platforms.
