Hotel: Overnight in Chongqing

Day 2Drive to visit Dazu to visit the Beishan Cliff Statue, then head to appreciate the Baodingshan, and continue trip to Sleeping Buddha Temple.

After breakfast, we will drive to Dazu to visit the Beishan Cliff Statues (北山石刻), which were first carved in the late Tang Dynasty and completed during the Southern Song Dynasty. The area centers around Da Fo Wan, consisting of five locations: Guanyin Slope, Yingpan Slope, Fo'er Rock, and Beita Temple, all featuring carvings along the cliff. The layout of the statues forms a crescent shape from south to north, with niches resembling beehives. The craftsmanship is delicate and exquisite, showcasing skilled and ingenious techniques.

Next, we will head to Baodingshan (宝顶山石刻), also known as Mingfeng Mountain. Situated between Tiaoshi and Shahe Township in Gao'an Town, Dianjiang County, Chongqing, it is the highest peak at the tail end of Dongshan Mountain, reaching an altitude of 1,063 meters. The mountain is named for its height and the frequent calls of phoenixes in the area.

We will then continue our trip to the Sleeping Buddha Temple (卧佛院), which originated during the prosperous Tang Dynasty. Large-scale statue and scripture carving took place during the Kaiyuan period of the Tang Dynasty but gradually declined after the Southern Song Dynasty. The Sleeping Buddha Temple preserves a significant number of cliff-carved stone statues and Buddhist scriptures from the Tang Dynasty, Five Dynasties, and Song Dynasty.

Day 3Visit Yuanjue Cave, Pilu Cave, Huayan Cave, and Mingshan Temple.

After breakfast, we will visit Yuanjue Cave (圆觉洞). The term "Yuanjue" refers to its twelve circular senses. In Buddhism, the concept of "enlightenment" signifies the realization of the perfect being through self-awareness, understanding others, and recognizing the nature of actions. This means that regardless of who we are, anyone can awaken to become a Buddha.

Next, we will drive to Pilu Cave (毗卢洞). The stone carvings in Pilu Cave were first created during the Later Shu period of the Five Dynasties and have been repaired and re-carved in subsequent dynasties. The "Water Moon Guanyin," located in Guanyin Hall, is popularly known as the "Purple Bamboo Guanyin" and has been praised as the "Venus of the East" by British Chinese writer Han Suying. It is considered a rare treasure of Northern Song stone carving art in the country.

Our journey will continue to Huayan Cave (华严寺), which is one of the earliest temples associated with the Anyue Stone Carvings. The stone carvings here primarily date back to the Tang Dynasty and possess high artistic value. Visitors can appreciate various forms of Buddha statues and murals, immersing themselves in the charm of Tang Dynasty culture. This site is a rare Buddhist holy land and tourist destination.

Finally, we will stop at Mingshan Temple (茗山寺). The cliff sculptures of Mingshan Temple feature smooth and natural carving lines, with lifelike images. One remarkable aspect is that thousands of years of weathering have added unique textures to the Buddha statue, contributing to its abstract beauty.

Today, we will pick you up at your hotel. Our first stop will be the Fuling 816 Nuclear Engineering Site. Nestled in the Wuling Mountains of Fuling, the 816 Underground Nuclear Project (816核工程遗址) is known as the largest man-made military cave in the world. Fifty-eight years ago, more than 60,000 workers came to Jianzishan, an uninhabited area surrounded by mountains and forests, to begin construction on this monumental and top-secret project. The work continued for 17 years and was nearly completed when the government decided to suspend it before any nuclear material could be produced. Now, as the secrets of these military caves are revealed, you will have the opportunity to explore the true nature of the 816 project, which has been hidden for almost 60 years.

On the way to Wulong, we will stop at the Wujiang Gallery Observation Deck (乌江画廊观景台). This is an excellent spot to enjoy the stunning scenery of the Wujiang River, attracting many tourists with its unique natural landscapes and rich cultural significance.
