Qutang Gorge: A Majestic Gateway to the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River
Nestled in Fengjie County, Chongqing, Qutang Gorge, also known as Kuimen Gorge, is the shortest yet most dramatic of the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River. Spanning just 8 kilometers from White Emperor City in the west to Daxi Town in the east, it captivates visitors with its sheer cliffs, roaring waters, and rich historical legacy.
Highlights of Qutang Gorge
Kuimen Gate
Known as the "First Gate of the Yangtze," Kuimen marks the western entrance to the gorge. Its towering cliffs, rising over 1,500 meters, narrow the river to just 100 meters at points, creating a breathtaking spectacle. This iconic landscape is featured on China’s 10-yuan banknote.
Ancient Plank Roads & Cliff Carvings
Carved into the cliffs, the Ancient Plank Roads once served as vital pathways for traders and soldiers, displaying centuries-old calligraphy and poetry etched into the rock, showcasing Chinese character styles from seal script to cursive.
Mengliang Ladder: Mysterious square holes in the cliff face, said to be steps carved by a Song Dynasty general.
Fengxiang Gorge: Ancient hanging coffins suspended high on the cliffs.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal seasons to explore Qutang Gorge are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). During these months, mild temperatures (10–25°C) and clear skies enhance the views of the gorge’s emerald waters and crimson cliffs. For a magical experience, visit in late November to early December when the surrounding mountains blaze with autumn foliage.
Avoid the summer flood season (June–August), as rising waters may obscure the gorge’s narrowest sections and reduce visibility.
