Balagezong is located in Nixi Township, northwest of Shangri La, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, with a total area of 276 square kilometers. Located at the junction of Yunnan, Sichuan, and Tibet, it is one of the core scenic spots in the Hongshan area of the "Three Parallel Rivers" World Natural Heritage.
Balagezong integrates snow capped mountains, canyons, glaciers, rivers, plateau lakes, and primitive forests. The highest altitude in the area is Balagezong Snow Mountain, which is the highest peak in Shangri La County. The lowest altitude is Shuizhuang, which borders Sichuan Province. The average altitude of the valley is about 2650 meters, and the annual average temperature is about 14.8 degrees Celsius. It belongs to the northern subtropical climate.
Balagezong Grand Canyon offers breathtaking natural scenery. Here, you can visit the deep canyon, the awe-inspiring snowy mountains. You can choose to kayak in the valley, or visit the primitive, photogenic ancient Tibetan villages. You will also see a thousand-year Bodhi tree, the branch of which resembles human palms. It's quite fantastic. The naturally-formed Buddhist tower is also a special attraction in the park. You have to trek from the end of the Jiala village road in order to visit the Buddhist tower.
