The Chongsheng Temple & Three Pagodas, located in Dali City, Yunnan Province, are the only 5A scenic spot in Dali and a famous scenic spot in Yunnan Province.
If you want to know more about the Bai culture and its architecture, don’t miss out this place. The highest and also the main pagoda among them is Qianxun Pagoda with 69.13 meters high, which was built 1200 years ago by the King of Nanzhao Kingdom. The pagoda is of 16 stories, a typical Tang style pagoda, each story has been covered by multiple tiers of upturned eaves. The name Qianxun means thousands of Xuns. Xun in Buddhism is the unite of length; one Xun equals to 8 feet, so Qianxun means 8000 feet (2667 meters). It is certainly an exaggerative expression to describe how tall the pagoda is.
The other two 10-story octagonal brick pagodas are shorter and smaller with the height of 42.19 meters. They are in the two sides of the Qianxun Pagoda, one in the north, the other in the south, to “protect” the main pagoda Qianxun.
Chongsheng Temple in ancient times is the royal temple, "Chong(崇)" is the worship, "Sheng(圣)" is the holy goddess of Mercy, so Chongsheng Temple is the worship of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva temple. The Chongsheng Temple is rebuilt and the three pagodas are ancient buildings.
