Mongolia Travel Advice: Tips for a Memorable Journey

Mongolia is unique in culture, history, and geography, but local communication and travel resources are limited. Since English is not widely spoken, it's beneficial to learn about its history and culture before traveling.

1.Visa Requirements

Check the visa requirements based on your nationality. For example, Australian tourists can enter Mongolia for stays of up to 30 days without a visa, but it's crucial to verify the latest entry regulations with the nearest Mongolian embassy or consulate. If you plan to stay longer than 30 days, you must register with the Office of Immigration in Ulaanbaatar within seven days of arrival.

2.Crime Awareness

Pickpocketing and bag - snatching are common, especially on public transport and in crowded areas like Chinggis Khaan International Airport and the Gandan Monastery. Criminals posing as police have robbed travelers in the Sukhbaatar Square area. Violent crime, although not common, does occur, particularly in Ulaanbaatar. Be aware of your surroundings, especially during major festivals and the summer tourist season.

3.Weather - Related Precautions

Mongolia has extreme weather, with temperatures ranging from 35°C in summer to-40°C in winter. Winter lasts from October to March, and snowstorms can occur outside the winter months. Make sure to bring appropriate clothing and footwear year-round, as the weather can change rapidly. Earthquakes, floods, and fires also happen occasionally, so follow the advice of local officials.

4.Medical Supplies

The standard of medical care is poor, especially outside Ulaanbaatar. It's advisable to bring basic medical supplies with you. You'll need to pay upfront for medical services, even in an emergency. If you're seriously ill or injured, medical evacuation may be necessary, so ensure your travel insurance covers this.

5.Respect Local Customs

Mongolia has a rich and unique culture. When visiting nomadic families, respect their traditions and way of life. For example, when entering a ger (yurt), remove your shoes and avoid stepping on the threshold.
